American Bison Poster The American Bison (Bison bison) – commonly referred to as the buffalo – is a large land mammal. It once roamed much of the grasslands of central North America in massive herds, numbering in the tens of thousands. Overhunting and habitat loss in the 19th century pushed the bison to near extinction with the population dwindling a few hundred individuals. Currently there are thought to only be roughly 20,000 bison in the wild today. They are a protected species on federal lands, but in some areas they are raised for their meat. For more information visit: Smithsonian National Zoo, National Park Trust, and National Geographic Kids as they offer guides, species lists, and identification tips. The American Bison poster features highly detailed and scientifically accurate illustrations, along with information about the animal and a map showing it’s range. The artistic design is complete with both common and scientific names in a title across the top of the image. The poster is shipped in a sturdy 2″ mailing tube with plastic endcaps. The posters can be signed or customized by the artist upon request.
